2018 Autumn Beach & River Clean

Next week Surfers Against Sewage’s are holding their largest ever Autumn Beach and River Clean starting from Saturday 20th October until Sunday 28th October.

Over the next fortnight Surfers Against Sewage volunteers will lead more than 460 beach and river cleans across the UK, involving more than 15,000 volunteers and their goal is to remove more than 35 tonnes of plastic pollution from the environment!

If you have some spare time why not join a beach or river clean near you. Find your nearest beach or river clean by heading to https://www.sas.org.uk/region/All/ or emailing Jack on beachcleans@sas.org.uk.

This year is more important than ever as the Government is planning to introduce a Deposit Return Scheme - a system where plastic bottles can be recycled and we create a circular economy. This has been hugely successful in Norway and parts of the US and has been the result of lots of campaigning by Surfers Against Sewage.

SAS are pushing for a world class inclusive scheme that includes ALL size plastic bottles as these are the items found on our beaches. So this year they have provided all of their beach clean leaders with a simple tool to use to list the different types of bottles they find on the beach. They will then share this evidence with the Government as part of the public consultation. Volunteers will also use social media to identify and share the brands most found during their cleans using #EveryBottleCounts.

No matter how small, every little bit of time you can provide will help this great cause!
